Have you noticed that almost all Green People’s natural and organic sun creams use Edelweiss in their protective formulas?
Discover the benefits of Edelweiss in sunscreen as we explore the UV protective properties of this precious Alpine plant.
Key points:
- Growing high in the Alps, Edelweiss is a plant that has evolved impressive sun-protective properties
- Rich in antioxidants, it can help to combat free radical activity, which may be triggered during sun exposure
- We recommend Green People Scent Free Sun Cream SPF30 and Green People Edelweiss Sun Cream with Tan Accelerator
What are the skin benefits of Edelweiss?
Journey with us high up into the Austrian mountains, where the land meets the sky, and if you look closely, you’ll notice a sprinkling of white petals dotted over this rugged terrain.

Edelweiss: Nature’s sun-defence flower
Those petals belong to Edelweiss, a protected Alpine plant that has evolved impressive skills for surviving sun-intense mountainous landscapes.
Edelweiss (leontopodium alpinum) grows high in the Alps, at altitudes of 3,000 metres, and is loved not only for its noble white petals, but also for its impressive skin-protecting properties. Edelweiss is rich in polyphenols, including flavonoids, among others, which give it its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
Being incredibly rich in antioxidants, means it can withstand extreme exposure to UV light.
In addition to being crucial to its survival, this natural sun defence system makes Edelweiss the ideal ingredient for helping our natural and organic sunscreens shield against UV damage.
Why use sunscreen with Edelweiss?
Here are a few reasons why we consider Edelweiss the perfect UV booster alongside our effective, protective sun filters.
- Abundant in antioxidants to counteract free radicals damage and sun-induced ageing
- Rich in Leontopodic acid to protect against skin sensitivity
- Contains skin-calming lignans for skin-kind comfort
However, while Edelweiss’ sun UV defences are impressive, it is essential to know that using Edelweiss alone won’t protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.
For effective sun protection, you need high-factor sun filters capable of shielding against over 90% of UVB.
That's where our skin-kind sun filters come in. We use a variety of safe, non-toxic UV filters to make natural sunscreens that are gentle on sensitive skin and also safe for our rivers and oceans.
